Night Springs | Over a Threshold Darkly
Hello Everyone!
Night Springs is probably the longest running sub plot in the Remedy setting. A simple TV show that rose up and took on a life of its own. First appearing in Alan Wake, it has shown up in every subsequent game. A mysterious town where weird things happen. But the town sometimes is a real place.
What is the nature of this mysterious town? How do the events in the episodes eventually become real? At the end of the day, What is Night Springs really?
In today's video we head back to the Oldest House and take a look at the Investigation Sector. Near the nexus of the place we find a Manuscript for one episode of the show. It was a sample episode that was sent to the shownrunners by our very own Alan Wake. It was an attempt to be picked up by the company to be a Staff Writer. No confirmation is received if the episode was ever aired. But there is something off about the story he wrote.
It seems to directly mimic the backstory of Control. Slidescape-36. And the genesis of the Hiss Invasion. What does this mean to the grander mystery of Night Springs?
What can we learn from her experience that gives us clues on some ways the town of Night springs can present? Let's find out.

I have long wondered why content creators rely on Norse myths when interpreting Alan Wake, when the games come from Finnish developers. It is not wrong, the franchise is intentionally ambiguous. For example the world trees people refer to as Yggdrasil or Lérað in Alan Wake games may be that, or it could be The Great Oak, Iso tammi, from Finnish perspective. This is distinct Karelian, Finnic, and Slavic world tree. Also understanding of soul is very different in old Norse beliefs than it is in old Finnic mythology. I wish that Dean would read a bit more into Finnish mythology, there are great sources online, and Kalevala isn't the only source. For example Dark Place has very clear inspirations from Tuonela, and Tuoni as a threshold. Realm of eternal sleep and dreams.

Here's some info about self understanding under the ancient Finnic framework: "Ancient Finns believed that each person had multiple souls. They identified three main soul entities: the spirit soul, the self-soul, and the guardian spirit. The spirit, also called "löyly," represented life and vitality, manifesting as breath, warmth, heartbeat, and blood flow. It initiated life in the womb and sustained it until the last breath, departing at death, sometimes seen as a small animal or bird. The self-soul formed one's personality and psyche, independent and aware, giving a newborn consciousness and personality. It was thought to be reborn within the family lineage and, upon death, joined the ancestors, maintaining its earthly appearance. If someone died violently or unjustly, their soul could become a restless ghost, unable to join the ancestors and instead seeking moral reparation or rebirth. The guardian spirit, known as "nature" or "luonto," was a supernatural protector that could appear as a person's double. It might be inherited at naming or teething and was believed to provide strength and success. A strong guardian was thought to grant exceptional abilities, and if it weakened, spells could strengthen it. Loss of this guardian led to misfortune, illness, or depression. Soul loss, akin to depression, was believed to stem from trauma, broken vows, or malevolent looks. It caused detachment from community and self, leading to a feeling of emptiness and meaninglessness. Healing involved a shaman, who, through ecstatic trance, would search for and retrieve the lost soul. This process emphasized that recovery required connecting with others, as only another's soul could restore a lost one, reigniting full humanity and community membership." Edgar's level is at the forefront of my thoughts when I remember this game. It was bar none my absolute favorite, due to both the utterly wild artstyle and the sad relatability of Edgar. The ways people can hurt you are boundless, and sometimes it doesn't even take any effort on their part. And pretty much 100% of the time (barring illegal and immoral actions), there's absolutely NOTHING you can do to get "justice" for yourself. Sometimes, someone breaks your heart, and there's no way to get back at them or "fix" whatever it is about you that is preventing you from being together. There's no do-overs, no take-backsies, no way to make things go back to the way they were in the golden years or get revenge for what they did to you. Sometimes, someone breaks your heart, leaves you effortlessly, takes everything you gave them right out of your soul along with them, and there's not one single thing more for you to do except for pick yourself up and move on. That's why El Odio is such a powerful force in his mind, a pain was inflicted on him, and there's no resolution. There's no getting the girl, beating the villain, and riding off into a fairytale sunset. You can't kill or satiate the bull. There's no way to make what happened NOT have happened. All you can do is accept the past, that someone got to crush your heart with no repercussions or cosmic justice, and just continue moving forward. It's how you defeat El Odio, and by extent OCD and depression, and it's the hardest thing in the world: Let go. Starve the beast. The woman I was going to ask to marry me, and who I honestly at the time thought was going to say yes, left me stone cold with barely a single-paragraph text. And would you believe me if I said the first thing I thought of moments after, while sitting there in the dark with a beer and a smoke processing what just happened... was Black Velvetopia and that damn bull?

I love your theory, you pulled together far more than I did. If anyone knows the answer to these mysteries it's probably Ahti (not that he's interested in explaining in any intelligible way). I suspect he is an avatar of the Oldest House itself - the Housekeeper, if you will - which would explain why he can go everywhere freely, even passing through the Ashtray Maze, and why he tasks Jesse with eliminating other growths feeding off the Oldest House.

OK so I need help trying to understand 2 contradictions in Alan Wake 2 the first one is While the plaque in the entry hall of the Valhalla Nursing Home states the building was built in 1965 for Finnish filmmaker Thomas Zane there are a number of indicators the building is far far older The date 1887 is lettered on the roofline above the main entrance which would be consistent with the manor's Victorian style date marks like this often note a building of historical value A newspaper clipping in the basement indicates Thomas Zane had purchased the old manor house outside town which means the building existed well before his and Barbara's arrival in Bright Falls So that's one thing that contradicts it's self I just put it dawn as Alan's story changing things but what I need help with is the second contradiction I need to know if you think this is a mistake made by Remedy or if it's on purpose cus it will mean something in the story So I was playing Alan Wake 2 and in the Valhalla Nursing Home Pat Maine says in 1991 a 15 year old girl called Norah Hesberg drowned in the old bunker, In 2014 Barry Wheeler buys the building near by and turns it into the Valhalla Nursing Home Then after Tor gose into the overlap if you go to the front porch where the old people are and talk to them a woman will say I think Tor and Odin got this place cheap cus a girl drowned and the place is haunted this confirms the building was turned into a nursing home years after the girl drowned But the problem starts when I went through the overlap cus in the bunker there is a newspaper that says, The local girl Norah Hesberg age 15 who went missing on Saturday of last week was discovered dead in the sealed underground bunker near Valhalla Nursing Home in Bright Falls The girl is said to have drowned in 1991 multiple times in the game and this newspaper is talking like it was only written a week later so how do they know the building is called Valhalla Nursing Home when it wouldn't have been named that until 2014 Is this a mistake by Remedy or was it done on purpose cus I think it is a mistake cus the first contradiction with the age of the Nursing Home adds something to the story it shows Alan's story is changing things and cus the building is older than originally thought there could be something special about the building but the newspaper adds nothing to the story its just weird how the newspaper calls the building the Valhalla Nursing Home when it wasn't named that yet

Little things like this rarely go onto my radar since reality is changing all the time. It likely shows remnants of different variations of the story. One of the residents also claims the building didn't exist at all before. The point of it all is we constantly question what is real and what's the story. We can track each individual detail down but it won't tell us anything really.

Hard to say on the Sterling/Willow AWE comparisons. I think that is likely going to be referenced more in a future Remedy game. Considering it also relates to the Platonic Solids that the Time Breaker dlc references as well. Personally I think something came out of it since they mention it directly in one of the documents. Possible a vehicle of traveling between realities. Hard to say though.

Nice video, as soon as I found that document in my playthrough of control I thought of a scanner darkly as well since it’s one of my favorite sci-fi drug movies. If your going over night springs episodes from every game are you going to include the dbd one? I’m still unsure of how much remedy was involved in that one but the vibe I got was they were trying to be as accurate to the series as possible and remedy basically gave the stamp for it so I sort of consider it cannon. Maybe if fictionalized events connecting to reality is the theme of night springs then it would be pretty on point to consider it.

how it is explained is not necessarily clairvoyance, because Alan ends up in the dark place in the 2010s and sees echoes of events going on in the real world, Alan as a child would also see these echoes in his dreams. we know the dark place can retroactively affect reality, so Alan being in it in his 40's, affected his experience as a child.

I have only one question about Alan Wake, which I hope you could answer for me: Why were all Night Springs episodes (American Nightmare, Number One Fan, North Star, Time Breaker) failed attempts for Alan Wake to escape from The Dark Place? Were they unsuccessful, because Alan skipped the Initiation phase? Or because, only Saga could play the role of the writer's savior better than anybody else? Or for some other reason perhaps? A thought occured to me through the last few videos of this playlist, specifically the nature of overlaps and their similarities with thresholds. As far as I understand, thresholds are when the Oldest House connects to another reality, where another paranatural event seems to have occurred. The clock threshold, for example, seems to focus around a reality where a single clock duplicated itself over and over, like somebody's first experience with the duplicate tool in Gmod. These thresholds remain in the oldest house as seemingly permanent changes in its layout. What if thresholds are the Oldest House's version of Overlaps? While an Overlap concerns the physical reality and the more mental Dark Place, Thresholds are perhaps when the ever changing blank slate of the Oldest House merges with a new reality, like the Quarry. Reality may simply be harder to imprint upon, as we at least pretend to understand its rules and regulations. An AWE where gravity simply ceases to function would be much harder to maintain compared to one where a dog has a few too many limbs. The Dark Place, being the other side of the mirror reality stands near, is closer to reality than, say, the "Hand" slide, which requires a supplementary object to merge a part of the other reality with our own. An Overlap could be considered a specific type of AWE, where the power of the Dark Place imprints upon our world a new story. Similarly, a Threshold could be a type of AWE specific to the oldest house, a more permanent one, where the shifting form of the House is pinned down onto another reality, like a notice nailed to a corkboard. Then again, I haven't gotten to play AW2 yet, so new information that I haven't sought out may invalidate this. Who can say?

Cassie's internal conflict follows the Internal Family Systems model in all but name, with a shiny paper covering. The IFS Model describes that everyone is made up of parts, each of which is created and utilized to help a person in certain contexts. The Librarian specifically is a manager, a part that’s built to help control the archetypes in a way that would keep the self and the other parts safe. The librarian did this through rationale, strictness, condescension and snappiness, which could have been helpful during the battle. But after the battle of Maligula, she was hurt by the guilt of having been the first to fail, so the librarian began to rise into power in order to keep her safe again. As she failed again and again to absolve her guilt by trying to talk things out with the Psychic Six, the Librarian's case grew bigger than the other archetypes The Librarian believed the only way to protect Cassie was to effectively shut down all of the emotional parts of herself and thus sought to use Raz to help lock away the parts she saw as detrimental to her. As a part of you grows out of control, it starts showing up in inappropriate contexts and trying to perform tasks it’s not well-suited to perform- your parts are two-dimensional in their aspects (and literally 2D in their representation in the game). A rogue part can even convince you that it is your conscience, that it is the real you. But people who use the model know that even an out-of-control archetype is good in certain situations and has a role in the person’s life. It just needs to be taken down a peg. The three other archetypes invading the Librarian represent something incredibly traumatic- dissonance. By getting an understanding of and trust from her other archetypes, Raz could help her Being faced with evidence that the Librarian’s two-dimensional worldview may be untrue represented itself as physical trauma for the librarian, enough trauma to unravel her and get her into a healthy position. At the end of the battle, she’s shrunk down to the same size as the other archetypes, but none of them are mad. They all still care about Cassie and want to work with her to do that, and upon realizing that, the Librarian works with them to help Cassie rediscover her true self (represented as them forming a 3D Cassie manifesting in her own mind) and become self-directed again.

Must be fucking nice. There’s plenty of us who simply will never have a chance to shrink our problems into obscurity, it will always be there getting stronger. And maybe after 75 years of constant therapy and enough tranquilizer to put out a herd of elephants will we be able to have one semblance of peace. Considering this literarily takes place at the loony bin, it is wrong for any of the characters to have simple everyday everyone has, type of issues. It’s also always beyond disgusted me that this game teaches “wait for a little boy to come around, hop in your mind and make things better for you”

I wonder if instead of A Scanner Darkly, the title more refers to 1 Corinthians 13:12 "For now we see through a glass, darkly;" Meaning that we see reality as though we are looking at it reflected on a dirty mirror.

@@GamingUniversityUoG I can't imagine it wasn't; the phrase is too poetically unique, and the ideas of the passage too perfectly reflect the book's themes. Add in Dick's love of incorporating religious themes into his books, and he certainly knew what he was doing.

I tried watching streams of this when it came out but bounced off, but after watching your other content I’ll likely see this playlist through. The only thing I wish they’d have done differently based on watching the start is tweaking the backstories so that Will and Jack were cousins or something so that Dominic could use his real accent (same with Aidan Gillen)

Recently I found a book list Sam Lake dropped somewhere on the internet. Yes, I saw the usual suspects: House of Leaves, Stephen King and so on. But I also came across Paul Auster, a crime novelist who wrote meta fiction about a writer who finds a notebook that changes his reality and the relationship he has with his wife (Oracle Night), or a book about a detecitve writer who gets caught up in a series of strange events in a noir New York City (The New York City Trilogy). Reminded me strongly of Alan Wake and Max Payne. Did you read Austers novels? I did, and it opens up a whole new avenue of Sam Lakes inspirations. I also wanted to ask a different thing. A friend of mine and constant watcher of your videos had contact with you about doing a video together, but you somehow stopped answering to his messages. I was pumped to see what came of this, because I like his writing and I think he is very inspired by Remedy. He told me that he still would very much like to do something with you. Do you plan anything on that front? Love your work, keep it up!

While you gloss over it a bit here, you mentioned the association between Ash Tree Lane and the Ashtray Maze, which must have percolated in the back of my head for a bit, since I saw this video but had forgotten about it. I "realized" a few days ago that the Ashtray Maze wasn't about the Ashtray: it was an Ash Tree Maze. And suddenly it made all the more sense why the Old Gods of Asgard would be able to guide you through it.

1:55:45 Even though Saga's partner is real, due to her ability to see the truth. I think her partner was “dreaming” himself in the Dark Place as the “fictional” Alex Casey written by Alan Wake. Thus, mirroring or echoing the events of the reported murder cases in New York. Caught in the current loop that later became a spiral created within the Dark Place. Due to this. It causes an identity crisis for the audiance. One that would bleed between the fiction and reality of Initiation to Return. Even to the point of Casey being branded and rebranded. Alan had to clarify that Casey was not a fictional character or his creation. Just a man twisted into a fictional character of the horror story that was written. To clarify her partner is real and not a fictional character. To make Casey not a suitable vessel for the Dark Presence. Also, with the use of the clicker and final manuscript pages. Alan solidified the new draft in their reality. A way to save Saga's partner before the Dark Presence turns him into a full-taken vessel based on fictional material. Then again this is just a theory. Thanks to anyone who reads this.

22:08 The art book said that, “The keys on Yusuke’s belt are for a locker filled with paraphernalia that are too important to show anyone. I felt that an artist or creator would hide the objects that were truly dear to him.”

@@GamingUniversityUoG Doubtful, since we never see the locker or what's inside it. And that’s the only place it’s mentioned. And somethings might be removed. Maybe some of the Phantom Thief logo sketches he made with Ryuji are there, and gifts he receives from friends. Maybe books involving artists. You'll be able to make educated guesses about it especially the more you get to know him but it's not a mystery that has a definitive answer. It's not like FNaF 4's box where what's in the box is directly tied into the narrative and always had a specific item inside it. We have no idea the size of his locker. Could be tiny could be huge.
